The Great Chamber is not a cave. It is a hollow carved into a petrified sand dune, and its floor is that same dune, still in motion. Wind funnels through the alcove mouth and rebuilds the slope grain by grain, so no two photographs of the room are identical.

The rock is Navajo Sandstone, laid down roughly 180 million years ago when a Sahara-scale erg covered what is now southern Utah. Cross-bedding records the wind direction of that lost desert; the diagonal lines sweeping across the alcove walls are fossil dune faces. Groundwater seeping along a weaker bedding plane undercut the cliff, and the overhang above collapsed in sheets. The result is an amphitheatre roughly the width of a tennis court, open to the south, glowing amber when reflected light enters at a low angle. Acoustics carry inside the chamber: a spoken sentence returns off the curved ceiling with a half-second delay, and the sand underfoot deadens footsteps entirely.
